2012 Santa Gertrudis Breeders of the Carolinas Field Day
The 2012 Santa Gertrudis Breeders of the Carolinas Field Day was held September 8, 2012, at Creech Farms in Zebulon, NC. Approximately 40 people were on hand for the event, which started around 9:30 AM.
The day began with a welcome from host Brandon Creech followed by a trip out into the fields of Creech Farms to discuss forage. Dan Wells, the Johnston County Livestock Extension Agent, talked about forage management and the health and varieties of grasses present in the field. He inquired about the Creeches' pasture management. He also demonstrated how to use a grazing stick to identify when it is time to pull the cows off a field and how thick a stand of grass is.
The presentation was followed by a purebred show, judged by Bob Rednour, DVM, of Large Animal Vet Services, Youngsville, NC. Grand Champion Heifer was Flatwillow Coral, exhibited by Flatwillow Farms, Statesville, NC. Reserve Grand Champion Heifer was Rose 114, exhibited by Creech Farms. Grand Champion Bull was Hadley 13/1, exhbited by Hadley Farms. Reserve Grand Champion Bull was Creech 102, exhibited by Creech Farms. The show had 27 entries, and full results are available at http://sgboc.blogspot.com. After the show, there was a beef brisket lunch and raffle.
Special thanks to Creech Farms for hosting the event, and don't miss the Santa Gertrudis Breeders of the Carolinas Sale in May 2013.
